CDC’s Nowak Named Inaugural Mizzou Advantage Distinguished Scholar

Glen NowakThe HCRC will add a new face in 2012 in Dr. Glen Nowak, senior advisor to Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Nowak is the inaugural Mizzou Advantage Distinguished Scholar. During the 2012 calendar year, Nowak will assist and provide guidance to the HCRC and the Missouri School of Journalism with collaboration and involvement in public health issues, share his expertise with University of Missouri students, faculty and staff.

“It’s very exciting to have Glen join us in 2012 as a Mizzou Advantage Distinguished Scholar,” said Dr. Glen T. Cameron, HCRC senior investigator and Maxine Wilson Gregory Chair in Journalism Research in the Missouri School of Journalism. “Provost Brian Foster and the J-School’s Charles Davis were really instrumental in making this happen. We’re already working with groups around campus to see how Glen might work with them, be it a talk in a class or brainstorming about curriculum or funding.”

Nowak will focus his efforts on strategic communication regarding science, health, environment and risk. He will also work with various groups on campus about how to manage crisis communications based on his experience in NCIRD and CDC’s pandemic influenza preparedness and response efforts.

In his role with the CDC, Nowak leads NCIRD’s efforts in communication science, health communications, risk communication, news media, social marketing and public engagement. Nowak has previously served as the CDC’s Chief of Media Relations. He also has experience as an academic from his time as an associate professor of advertising and communications at the University of Georgia.
