Internships

The HCRC is committed to giving students hands-on experience in health communication and science journalism. Over the years, students have worked with HCRC staff and faculty on a variety of media interventions, social marketing projects and research.

The HCRC works with students throughout the University, regardless of major. There are opportunities for undergraduate students (e.g. internships, directed studies) and graduate students (e.g. directed studies, graduate research assistantships, Smith/Patterson Fellowship). From time to time, we have hourly opportunities for students, although typically students working with the HCRC are unpaid. We look for students who have a strong interest in health communication or science journalism and who have experience in convergence, web and mobile development, graphic design, research and writing.

Over the years, our students have gone on to professional jobs in places such as Business Insider, Discovery News, Johns Hopkins University, the National Science Foundation, and the Smithsonian Channel. Our doctoral students have moved on to jobs as professors at prominent universities both in the U.S. and abroad including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champlain, Texas Tech University, University of Iowa, University of Kansas, Virginia Commonwealth University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Applications for internships are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, please send a letter of interest, a current resume or CV, and a portfolio or links to your work to us at hcrc [at] missouri [dot] edu.
